  • Rationale of the Conference

Human society now faces complex threats and challenges that cannot be addressed by traditional approaches of problem solving. This is evident in the various transboundary challenges that our planet faces such as climate change, public health crisis, war and instability, increasing occurrence of disasters, continued depletion of natural resources, declining ecosystem services, and increasing population–which have led to the growing interest in sustainability.

The major international agreements and frameworks in the past few decades are proof of the serious and substantive efforts by various sectors of our society to promote sustainability. There is a growing consciousness, both globally and locally, to approach various societal problems from a holistic perspective. Thus, there is a need to discuss and explore ways to coordinate our efforts towards sustainability.

Sustainability is a “discipline that points the way toward a sustainable society” by addressing “problems at  three levels (human systems - security, lifestyle, values, norms, health; social system - policies, economy, industry, technology; global system - climate, resources, energy, ecosystem)” (Komiyama and Takeuchi, 2006, p. 2). Building upon the success of the  1st International Forum on Sustainability Science held on 29 May 2015, the 2nd International Symposium on Sustainability Science (IFSS 2024), in partnership with the Caraga State University (CSU), will continue to serve as a platform for professionals, academics, researchers, and practitioners to converge, exchange ideas, and co-create knowledge that addresses the pressing sustainability challenges of our time.

IFSS 2024 aims to further bridge the gap between academic disciplines and promote collaboration across sectors to drive transformative change. IFSS hopes to bring together different institutions and experts all around the globe to discuss and hear various challenges and resolutions to let people understand different approaches of Sustainability Science. The forum wishes to broaden the networks of different sciences from in and outside of the academe, and of experts and practitioners by working and thinking together to advance and apply the knowledge of Sustainability Science.
